Oedipus In the play "Oedipus," irony is used frequently as and as eloquently by Sophocles to the reveal theme of seeking knowledge. Not knowing the King of Thebes, Oedipus, gives speeches on finding the murderer of the King of Laias and how wretched the poor soil will be when the truth is revealed. " Then once more I must bring what is dark to light..., whoever killed King Laios might- who knows?-might decide at any moment to kill me as well. By avenging the murder of the King, I protect myself, (Sophocles 1109). The speech shows how dedicated Oedipus in the pursuit of the murderer and not only the avenge of the King but to save himself. He will not be saving but adding down to his life. Oedipus doesn't realize he is in pursuit of himself. He continues his speech "Moreover: If anyone knows the murderer to be foreign, Let him not keep silent: he shall have his reward from him," ( 1112). With his own words he asks for the truth. But he can't handle the truth, for he has no idea what he is asking for or for whom he is searching for. He also states that he wants the people of his country to outcast the murderer once he is discovered. "I solemly forbid the people of this country, Where power and throne are mine, ever to receive that man or speak to him , no matter who he is..., ( Sophocles 1112). He fears the oracle and wants to do it right by it. But in doing so he will seclude himself from his own people as well as his family. He even prays to God asking him to punish the murderer severely with no avail. "I pray that that man's life be consumed in evil and wretchedness... And as for me, this curse applies no less," ( 1112). He is sure that that the curse doesn't apply to him, so he is willing to announce this publicly. He doesn't know that the old man he killed was King Laois. His only concern at this time is to free the city from sickness. He later announces that the King if he had not been killed would have had children and he would act as Laois' son and avenge his father's death. "I say I take the son's part, just as though I were his son, to press the fight for him," ( 1112). Not only is he going to battle for the murdered King, but wants all the people in the city and damnation will be their reward. As he continues his search for knowledge, Oedipus brings the only man known to know the truth about the prophet Teiresias. Oedipus feels the truth will now be revealed and satisfaction will come to him. "How dreadful knowledge of the truth can be when there's no help in truth...," (1114). This speech from Teiresias is not well interpeted by Oedipus. He is raged. Oedipus wants Teiresias to speak up and tell what he knows but as Teiresias continues to speak the Oedipus is confused and angered. Teresias blames Oedipus for the ruin of the city and finally states that Oedipus is the murderer. Oedipus is furious with Teresias and tells him to leave.The truth is already hard to swallow. Then it all starts coming together. Iocaste reminds Oedipus of the story. "Laisaus was killed By marauding strangers where three highways meet; But his child had not been three days in the world Before the King had pierced the baby's ankles...", (1124). This joys Oedipus' memory of the old man he killed and how he has marks on his heels. Fear overcomes Oedipus. He starts asking Iocaste questions about the King. What did he look like? Was the King escorted at the time of his death? He doesn't want to believe what he is hearing. As Oedipus last resort to seek knowledge he asks the only witness to the crime to come and give his story. The shepherd to the King of Laios is reluctant to speak. But Oedipus insists on the truth. Tracing the History and Genealogy of Your Home Have you ever wondered about the history of your house, apartment, church or other building? When was it built? Why was it built? Who owned it? What happened to the people who lived and/or died there? Or, a favorite question as a child, does it have any secret tunnels or cubbyholes? Whether youre looking for documentation for historic status or are just plain inquisitive, tracing a propertys history and learning about the people who have lived there can be a fascinating and fulfilling project. When conducting research on buildings there are usually two types of information that people search for: Architectural facts, such as date of construction, the name of architect or builder, construction materials, and physical changes over time.Historical facts, such as information on the original owner and other residents through time, or interesting events associated with the building or area. A house history may consist of either type of research, or be a combination of both. Get to Know Your Home Begin your search by looking closely at the building for clues about its age. Look at the type of construction, the materials used in construction, the shape of the roofline, the placement of the windows, etc. These types of features may prove useful in identifying the architectural style of the building, which helps in establishing the general construction date. Walk around the property looking for obvious alterations or additions to the building as well as roadways, paths, trees, fences, and other features. It is also important to look at nearby buildings to see whether they contain similar features which will also help to date your property. Talk to relatives, friends, neighbors, even former employees - anyone who might know something about the house. Ask them not only for information about the building, but also about former owners, the land upon which the house was built, what existed at that location prior to construction of the house, and the history of the town or community. Begin your search for deeds by learning where they were recorded and stored for the time and place in which you are interested. Enforcement legislation entitled the National Prohibition Act (or more popularly, the Volstead act, after Representative Andrew J. Volstead of Minnesota) was passed on Oct. 28, 1919, over President Woodrow Wilson’s veto. The 18th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States not only prohibited the "manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors," but their importation and exportation also. It was adopted after a nationwide crusade by temperance groups, notably the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, or WCTU. The amendment was enforced and defined by Congress in the Volstead Act. One result of the amendment was that the production and sale of alcoholic beverages became the province of organized crime. Atticus, who lives in a town inhabited by a racist, white community, decided to do what he thinks is right and defended a black man named Tom Robinson, who was spurious accused of raping a white girl. Despite Atticus’s cognizance of the vicious calumny that he will be subjected to by society, he nevertheless made the decision which he considered is right and defended Tom Robinson. This further shows that decision are purely based on the individual. In addition, the fact that decisions of the individual can never be fully controlled by society is shown in the field of science, particularly through Galileo’s choice of having a heliocentric view on the universe. Galileo was a scientist who, after adequate research into the field, maintained that, contrary to what the church and Aristotle believed, the sun is in the center of the universe. At the time, society strongly believed that the earth is the center of the universe and considered every other scientist who said otherwise to be mocking religion and thus deserving punishment. Because of his theory, Galileo was convicted of heresy and consequently sentence to home imprisonment. Surely, it was Galileo’s decision to voice his theory which, rather interestingly, happened to be correct all along! The aforementioned examples are just three a vast number of people who decided to go against society wishes. If anything, these people exemplify the human nature of exploring the unknown, of thinking critical outside the box and of seeking dreams regardless of the perils and obstacles on the way, these are the people who make progress possible; without such individuals, society would be a collection of robots that operate based on norms and that would never be able to think, speak or act out anything that does not fit this â€Å"norm†. Does God Exist? Sean Johnson MWF8-8:50 Who is God? A startling question that most people will answer yes to is: Does God exist? Websters Dictionary (Websters p. 412) defines God as the supreme being, seen as the omnipotent creator and ruler of the universe. Whereas a theologist describes him as God is the infinite and perfect spirit in whom all things have their source, support, and end. (Thiessen p. 55) Whatever the case the statistics from Multipoll CGI on the internet show that 86 percent believe that God exists. Probably half or more of that actually attend a church or seek after God. Upon further investigation there are actually many reasons to believe in God. From the beginning man has always had intuition or a feeling of already knowing certain things. The law has been written on the hearts of all so that they may recognize a greater power that is God, says Pastor Chan of Cornerstone Community Church. God has given everyone the intuition of knowing his presence, and the feeling of right and wrong or moral law. One author of Introductory Lectures in Systematic Theology says, The belief in the existence of God is also necessary. It is necessary in the sense that we cannot deny his existence without doing violence to the very laws of our nature. If we do deny it, the denial is forced and can only be temporary (Thiessen pg. 56). Examining this statement one fact stands out. If there is no God how could laws of right and wrong be made? If evolution did happen and human life began to form all around the world, how would they know right from wrong? Or more importantly, why is there a right from wrong? While people were still evolving, why did they not eat or kill each other? It was not wrong since there is no right or wrong. Did some humans get together in a room after they had evolved and vote on what should be right and what should be wrong? Of course not! That would be chaos because no one would agree, and the list would be very long even if they did make the rules. And even if such a bizarre list did happen, how would these laws be already written on a childs heart the instant that it is born? If humans evolved from and are animals why do animals not have a moral law, but humans do? For example, if someone has a dog and says, Bad Dog! when it does something that person does not like, the dog learns by the tone of your voice to cower and hide like he has done something bad. Still the animal will do the bad thing. Why? Because it has no guilt or remorse for what it has done, and it does not know right from wrong. Now there are people that do bad things without any guilt or remorse seemingly, but the bottom line is that people have some sort of conscious that animals do not have. Humans therefore can not have evolved from animals because animals have no moral law and reason like humans have. Even further, if all mankind evolved from animals how come there are no more evolutions taking place? A scientist could waste all of his breath arguing that the cosmos of the swamp gas that reflected off of Venus affected the earths moon which slowed the evolutionary process on earth down, but without any ounce of proof it is more logical and takes surprisingly less faith to believe in God than to believe in some whacked out theory that evolution just happened (Dr. Zustiak, Chromey pgs.11-12 ). Furthermore, even if every human was made from a random gibberish of atoms, why should there be a concern of conscience within life? Everyone lives in a world of everyone elses opinion according to evolution. If there is no set rules of life and the only rule is survival, then what does it matter if someone bombs a sporting event? Or who cares if some guy wants to run around naked screaming I hate Indians , while doing drugs and holding an pornographic magazine as he mows people down with an uzi (any relation to real life events is purely coincidental)?
